Course on

Structural Plant Design

(for nuclear energy applications)

 

 

Course Outline and Content

The course is aimed to provide basic and advanced concepts about structural plant design and capacity assessment, enabling the learner to understand the relevant phenomena and plant constraints, which affect the design and performance assessment of the existing and/or new reactor system, and to apply them to classical problems. The content is conceived to progress from basic structural mechanics (background) to quantitative analysis, also proposing exercises and application case to be performed either manually or with the aid of computer programming.

 

The course is made of the following units (the indicated time duration is approximate):

·         Unit 1 –Plant Design Criteria (14 hours)

·         Unit 2 – Soil Structure Interaction (7 hours)

·         Unit 3 –Seismic safety design of NPP SSCs (25 hours)

 

Exercises and case studies are performed in the following subjects:

·         Unit E1a- Basic exercise on structural mechanics (beam and shell) (3 hours);

·         Unit E1b-Examples of lumped mass approach (SDOF or MDOF) Balance Equations (3 hours);

·         Unit E2- Examples of (implicit and semi-implicit approach) fluid-structure and soil-structure interaction (3 hours);

·         Unit E3ab- Basic balances for LWR SSCs undergoing seismic solicitation (3 hours);

·         Unit E3b - Basic application of FEM codes (3 hours).

Requested Background

The learner is assumed to have basic knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Applied Thermodynamics and basic programming skills at least at a level of BSc in Physics or Engineering (EQF Level 6).
